Hindi is a standardized form of the Khariboli dialect of Hindustani, and has become the lingua franca of the Hindi belt, a linguistic region of northern central India comprised of a Hindi dialect continuum. The term 'Hindi' in reference to a linguistic group has a broad and narrow meaning in census data, and is sometimes used to refer to speakers of dialects outside of the standard Hindi form. Hindi is closely related to and mutually intelligible with Urdu, another standardized form of the Khariboli dialect of Hindustani, but sometimes their dissimilarities are emphasized by their speakers due to demographic differences.

Hindi is spoken by over 120 million speakers internationally. As a Hindustani language, it belongs to the Central Zone within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family.
